Confessions of a wastepaper lover

Years ago the amount of chewing gum I consumed was excessive – for a short time at least. I would have preferred chocolate, but given my proclivity to put on weight, that was not an option. There I sat chewing gum like a cow chews cud – mechanically and with determination – to distract myself from acute physical discomfort and boredom. In the end it was no use, but I was left with hundreds of pretty chewing gum wrappers – the inner layer of a certain brand that came in metallic greens, blues, orange, pink …

Taking into account my mild obsession with paper, the outcome was inevitable: Miniature books. For their covers scraps of printed paper left over from other projects came in handy. To hold chewing gum wrappers and front/back covers together I used long stitch in combination with coptic binding, which was quite fiddly to work at that size. The finished books are just 4,8 x 5,6 cm in size. Pretty, aren´t they?

Ode to pretty packaging: Lots of chewing gum wrappers turned into little books.

Long stitch in combination with coptic binding at this size requires patience and deft hands.
