Tiny Bouquet No. 12

Sträußchen Nr. 12

Am I the only one who thinks of alcohol when passing an elderbush ladden with berries? The teetotal alternative, fruity pancakes, is just as tasty, though less inebriating. Cheers!

Prost!

I found two empty vials of almond essence crammed into a corner of my spice rack. Wrapped in twine they make perfect mini vases. While assembling this still life I had an odd train of thought: lemons – winebottles in baskets – the south of Europe – donkeys. Outdated clichés, I know, and not particularly original to boot. Dear Southern Europeans, I apologize.

The elegance of a weed. I am tempted to proclaim the sparseness of this flower arrangement as the New Simplicity. It could also be called a Smart Bouquet. On second thought, no it can´t: Nobody gets obscenely rich by exploiting the predicament of others/nature, when a flower has been picked shortly before the roadside is due to be mown.

Grasses grew in abundance this summer. Ankle- to waist-high they swayed in the wind rustling their secrets unheeded. On closer inspection their fragile beauty is stunning. Pick a few and watch them bloom, sending forth their pollen. Achoo!

Hatschi!

The smallest of them all? Well, at least the vessel is. A meadow in a thimble.

The Death Of A White Giant

Der Tod eines Weißen Riesen

Reader, I ate him! But do not worry, no warm-blooded being suffered. My friends and I call the common cauliflower jokingly „White Giant“.

Mother, who knew I was planning a still life, bought a rather mangled specimen – why do they always chop off the leaves? – plus a plump kohlrabi with tiny leaves ravaged by caterpillars. Though slightly drooping due to languishing in my kitchen for two days, both vegetables retained their lovely texture, pleasing form and subtle colour. As you can see, my models worked hard and gave their best.

Cauliflower, kohlrabi and two piteous potatoes awaiting their foreseeable end.
Off you go into the pot! | Ab in den Topf!
The remains of the „White Giant“. Can you see the kohlrabi quivering? She was spared the knife, by the way. | Was vom Karfiol übrig blieb. Sehen Sie wie die Kohlrübe zittert? Sie musste übrigens nicht unters Messer.
He was a great cauliflower to the end, surprisingly tender and succulent.

That night I dreamt about negotiating the film rights for Episode 2: The Revenge of the White Giant.

Der Tod eines Weißen Riesen

LeserInnen, Ich habe ihn gegessen! Keine Sorge, kein warmblütiges Wesen musste leiden.
