Tiny Bouquet No. 82

Cheerful, isn´t it? And yet … Ranunculus acris, the common buttercup, is toxic. I woke up angry, so to choose a bouquet featuring this plant prominently seemed somehow appropriate.

| A tightly packed bunch of white and yellow meadow flowers in a bulbous little vase.
| An innocuous looking bouquet, but buttercups can create impressive skin sores.

The Art of Standing Still

Nothing moves. We are stuck. Physically, intellectually, psychologically, economically. Or are we?

It is a mystery to me how people manage to travel despite the pandemic. But obviously they do. I have read about holidaymakers going to Kenya, South Africa, the Seychelles or Mallorca. Are they richer, less risk averse, more resourceful and reckless than me? Or just plain stupid?

I have been staying in Vienna and will do so for the foreseeable future. European travel by train was a logistical nightmare even before Corona. Now using public transport is out of the question. I own neither car nor bycicle, so even daytrips to humble destinations in Austria are beyond reach. Freedom of movement has become a concept of the past.

Instead I walk. The world has shrunk to the distance my feet will carry me. Much has been written about the benefits of walking. But there is a difference between walking for pleasure and walking out of necessity. When life turns into a time-consuming obstacle race, ruled by an endless succession of enforced regulations, infringing on even the smallest personal decision, walking is getting ever more stressful. Using the shortest routes possible walking to and from work or going grocery shopping month after month after month is not only physically taxing but also repetitve and boring beyond belief. Mindfulness, living in the moment and awareness be damned. Humans need stimuli, social interaction, chance encounters and serendipitous coincidences to allow mental growth and further well-being. To stop and appreciate amazing moments, to make memories that are worth remembering, said moments need to happen in real life. Living vicariously by watching others enjoying themselves on screen, be it in a movie or on social media, is simply not enough.

For the majority of the population there is no forward momentum, no perspective, no feeling of achievement, no hope. Goalposts are arbitrarily shifted according to the whims of governments. The trick seems to be to deny others the pleasures of life, while applying quite a different set of rules for oneself, one´s friends and sponsors. Inequality is on the rise wherever you look. New laws are being written and it does not bode well for those without the opportunity to turn a profit from standing still.

The emotional cost of forced marches

Der emotionale Reibungsverlust bei Gewaltmärschen

It is hot, the hottest day of the month so far. I have just returned home from my place of work drenched in sweat and I am knackered. Due to coronavirus I refrain from using public transport. Instead I walk, bemoaning the loss of valuable time. For today that meant two joyless 80-minute walks, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon, carrying a heavy rucksack with food/drink, first aid kit, masks, hand-desinfectant etc. plus my beloved crossbody bag. These days, trudging along I regularly feel like an overburdened donkey, without the benefit of four legs. All work and no play, the promised carrot a figment of my imagination.
Tired and emotionally numb I stare at pictures of water on yet another screen, willing my mind to imagine a cool breeze.

Hello!

Hallo!

Welcome to my blog.

Given my mood in recent months, I would willingly apply for a job as ornamental hermit. Alas, the heyday of this venerable profession is long past. It took a friend of mine years to convince me to heed the signs of the times and share the fruits of my imagination/mild obsessions. Therefore here I am – finally starting a blog when everyone else ist heading for instagram.

I am easily bored, so don´t expect the blog to stick to one subject. You will get to see glimpses of my artwork, objects/places that inspire me and the results of craft projects I carry out to keep me entertained. In short the blog will be a hotchpotch.

Before I go, let me introduce Wollmispel, the personification of my inner creative imp, who often keeps me awake at night. She is a brainy creature, hence the large head.

Wollmispel – running the full gamut of emotions!

Wollmispel – ganz emotional!
