Auf der Suche nach Inspiration

Time flies and May is almost over, so let us celebrate the end of the month with a seasonal bug, the cockchafer, in German Maikäfer. I have not seen one in nature for ages, but I own a beautiful fragment of a wall chart explaining the physique of the Maikäfer. Once used to teach children it is currently on display as part of an inspiration board. As you can see, I glued about ten scraps together and filled the gaps with Japanese paper. These battered remnants of a torn wall chart were initially destined for the recycling bin. (The Viennese collect waste-paper assiduously) I asked politely and received them as a gift.

A miracle of nature: Look at those wings! Regrettably I still have not found out what the whole wall chart looked like.

I use two upcycled picture frames as inspiration/mood boards. One is a constantly changing haphazard mishmash of scrap paper, postcards, photos, swatches and whatever takes my fancy at the moment. The other pin board, shown here, develops more slowly. It is at heart an accumulation of things I cherish or keep for reference. Sooner or later one of these objects will serve as inspiration for a book project or story – or has already done so, e. g. the strip of folded paper on the far left. The aeroplane is a prototype for a pop-up in a book I have not shown you yet.

The state of the inspiration board at present. If you want to learn how to fold paper, the book „Folding Techniques for Designers“ by Paul Jackson is an excellent starting point.
